Walking into a dispensary for the first time is easier than walking into a bar. Here's exactly what happens, in order, so nothing surprises you.
Before you come
Bring a government-issued photo ID that shows you're 21 or older: driver's license, state ID, passport. That's the only requirement. No medical card, no appointment, no membership. Cash and cards both work at Herbology.
At the door
Someone checks your ID. That's it. It takes ten seconds and it happens to everyone, every visit. In New York it's the law, and it's also the reason a licensed shop is a safe place to buy.
The menu
Inside, products are grouped by type: flower, pre-rolls, edibles, vapes, concentrates, and smoke-free options like tinctures and topicals. Every product has a label with its THC content and, for edibles, milligrams per piece. You can browse the same menu on your phone before you come in, which some people find easier for a first visit.
Talking to a budtender
Say it's your first time. It's the most useful thing you can tell them. Then say what you want to feel or do, not what you think you should ask for. "Something mild for a Friday night" gets you a better answer than "an indica." They'll usually show you two or three options and explain the difference.
How much to buy
Small. An eighth of flower or a single pre-roll is a normal first purchase. For edibles, a pack of 5mg gummies you can cut in half. You can always come back. New York's limit is 3 ounces of flower per purchase, which is far more than a first visit needs.
After you buy
Your purchase comes in a sealed bag. Keep it sealed until you're home; open cannabis in a car is treated like an open container. Store it somewhere cool, dry and out of reach of kids and pets.
If you'd rather not come in
Order for pickup and it's bagged when you arrive, or order delivery if you're within 3 miles of the shop. The driver checks the same ID at the door.
